Determine key components of a business flow
In general, a business flow is any series of related activities that are performed in order to produce a final result. A manufacturing supply chain is an example of a business flow. The key components of a business flow are steps and gates. Steps are individual activities performed in the flow. For example, in a supply chain, shipping products from one location to another would be one step. A gate is a decision point in the flow. Gates make sure that certain conditions are met before the production process continues. For example, at a shipping dock, workers may need to verify that products being shipped meet certain quality standards before those products can be accepted for shipment. A decision gate typically has two outputs: accept and reject. An accept output lets the business flow proceed to the next step; a reject output halts the business flow and causes it to restart at an earlier step.
